J Cole Take Us Back and Brings Us To Present

I think if I had to choose a rapper to be best friends with there would be a few at the top of my list and although Drake is my number one stunna, J Cole would be lottery pick. The reasoning is not because Jermaine is from the same state as myself but more so because he is just a real kind of guy. In this next clip you will see what kind of dude the Fayetteville North Carolina native really is and how the Roc Nation rapper dealt with his own struggles while making his number 1 album "Born Sinner" and the beautiful thing it became.

"I definitely consider myself  an underdog. I always was in the underdog position just being from Fayetteville North Carolina coming to New York City the odds is against me. I got a long way to go and I know that, but I am not going to stop until they give me my props. Ultimately happiness is the most important thing and the pure happiness I think is finding happiness with yourself how you are."

"Once you get a deal it's certain adjustment that you got to make and some people survive and make it through it and some people don't. So I spent awhile, I spent a couple mixtapes and an album working on that balancing act and trying to find the same comfort I had in that bedroom, I had to refind that comfort in the studio or on the record label. I'm just like anybody else I got insecurities and stuff that I'm self conscious about . I haven't felt insecure since I was seventeen eighteen as I became a man I became more secure about those things. Until you get in the public spot light and people say things about you. I know, I know what's going on up here I am not worried about that so let me use that as a way to empower other people."

"Just recording the album period I had a lot of moments that let me know I was on the right track. Things that like were too perfect to be coincidences I don't believe in coincidences I believe everything that happens for a reason. So "Crooked Smile" just one song had so many of those moments, even the way I made the hook. There was some random girl that I'd never met before in my life that was at the elevator in the studio, she played me some music right on the spot. It was good her voice was unique and the writing was great, so I was like "yo I am working on a song right now would you hear it and see if you could write something too". She was like "yea sure". So I play her the song on my headphones but I hear her start humming melodies and right away I got chills, like oh. We hash out the melodies and put words to them and next thing you know I got a hook to "Crooked Smile" when I didn't even know where it was going to come from, and it just appeared to me like that."

'When you hear the album it starts off real dark as the album progresses it turns a little lighter. The reason why that is it's just a metaphor for getting out of a dark place, out of a depression, out of hell, trying to make it to heaven, and trying to make it to happiness. That just represents what I was going through and "Crooked Smile" serves as like a theme song of that second half of the album."

'My motivation for my life an rhymes, three words "Touch The People"."

That is the reason why.

Throwback Thursday: Spits Nelson - "I'm Great"

With Spits Nelson's latest album Closer Than You Think dropping a week ago tomorrow I wanted this week to be all about him and his music in a way. I knew that I wanted to make my Throwback this week one of his tracks as I listened to his new album last week and started thinking of when I first started writing about his material and listening to the artist known as Spits Nelson. My goal was to take a different approach to Throwback Thursday this week and I think I accomplished just that with this weeks Throwback offering when I asked for a bit of hands on help from the Throwback artist himself Spits Nelson. I asked Spits to pick a song of his and give me the meaning and I would take it from there, and he did just that. The song Spits chose was his Korona-produced track "I'm Great" from his Open It Up EP and he had this so say about the track,
"When I wrote this song I was thinking about everything that happened in my life and the things that made me who I am today. At the time I was living in Boston and Korona was studying abroad so he emailed me the beat and I immediately felt the vibe and wrote to it. I wanted to make something that people could listen to in the morning as their theme music for a good ass day while still giving my lyrical commentary."
When I found out who Spits Nelson was just a mere couple of years ago I remember wanting to know his background and searching for anything I could find on him. Listening to this same exact track and just thinking about the ammunition that he had as someone who was only beginning and now time has brought us to Closer Than You Think, what a journey it has been and will only continue to be.

New Music: Eminem - "Rap God"

I had to gather my opinion before I posted this new song "Rap God" by Eminem because for one there is no such thing as a "Rap God" (I will leave other views out for the sake of not bringing up another debacle), however, I would say that there are such things as "Rap Greats". Maybe I will come across as opinionated and controversial by cancelling out the thought or the pondering of such thing as a "Rap God", but I am sure little ol' me could not ever cause as much controversy as Em will by calling himself a "Rap God". There are already quite a few other rappers that think the same thing of themselves as such, I hate to name names but Ye' said it, and will continue to say it. I would have a debacle over who is a "Rap Great" any day verses who thinks of themselves as a "Rap God". Lets get real people and while getting real take a listen to Em's latest track "Rap God" as he gives no catchy hook just raw lyrics on a platter to formulate why he is so great. I cannot deny his thriving talent that continues to be great years after he first introduced the world to himself as the real Slim Shady. Do not get me wrong I am a fan of Eminem but there are no such things as a Rap God...THE END! Em's upcoming album The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is slated to drop November 5th.

VIDEO: BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher 2013: Wax, Rapsody, Emis Killa, Rittz, Jon Connor

I think it is safe to say for the most part that the Cyphers are usually the viewers favorite parts of the BET Hip Hop Awards every year. This year there was one Cypher in particular that I was especially excited to see and that was the one that North Carolina female rapper Rapsody took part in. She was apart of the first Cypher of the night that featured Wax, Emis Killa, Rittz, and Jon Connor. Each of these artists were extremely talented but it was Rapsody's performance that I had anticipated seeing. Rapsody's word play and lyrical skill proved that she is a female MC that truly has game. Check out the Cypher below.

"A Day Late" Melodic Monday: Drake - "The Motion"

Melodic Monday arrives a day late this week with a track from none other than the OVO man himself Drake and as he would say "Better Late Than Never But Never Late Is Better". If you purchased the Best Buy Copy of Drake's new album Nothing Was The Same then you got "The Motion" as an added bonus. If you purchased the regular deluxe edition then you just got the two extra bonuses, either way here is "The Motion" for your listening pleasure as this weeks "A Day Late" Melodic Monday.

Changed up the lyrics just a bit so put yourself in my place. Besides Drake always says he makes the type of music that both a male and female perspectives can relate to and I will say this is one of those cases. #ThatIsAll

"It's not me and you, it's not me it's you
You're reckless and you know it, they don't love you like I do
Say you're moving on, well, I guess that's just the motion
I guess that's just the motion"

"Yeah, looking back on it at least my pride is intact
Cause we said no strings attached and I still got tied up in that
Everything that I write is either for him or about him
So I'm with him even when I'm here without him and he know it
The guy that I wanna save is like a danger to my health
Try being with somebody that wanna be somebody else
I always thought he was perfect when he was being himself
Don't even know how to help, but I guess that's just the motion"

He'll probably come around
Soon as I settle down, that's the motion
Oh-oh, I guess that's just the motion"

Drake MTV Documentary - "Better Than Good Enough" (2010)

Considering Drake has the number one album in the country and we are 4 days into the month of October which is also know in my world as (OVO Month) I figured I may as well live in the moment and post all the stuff that really made me love him and his music to begin with. With that being said I found his MTV Documentary "Better Than Good Enough" as I was doing research on one of his lyrics and it actually derived from something Sway had asked him in the documentary...the question & answer went something like this Sway : “Who are you? and what do you do?"
Drake : "I am Aubrey Graham and I make a living off being myself”.
It is moments like that question and answer that is riveting in a sense when someone actually knows who they are, who they will always be, and will never try to be something other than themselves. The documentary chronicles the release of his debut album Thank Me Later and displayed a different side of the Toronto rapper, a more real version of himself. Since he began his career Aubrey "Drake" Graham has never portrayed to be anyone except for himself and I believe that the realness of who he is actually sets the difference between he and every other rapper in the game. Watching this documentary along with any other interview or documentary about him and having heard Thank Me Later, Take Care, and his latest album Nothing Was The Same you will see the growth exemplified from the rapper both career wise and personally. Where he has been and how far he has came in the short time he has been in the industry all while remaining himself will give you a new love and respect for Drake the person, Drake the rapper, and his music.

Drake "Nothing Was The Same" Week In Review & Album Stream

I am a week late with this post but I had to live in the moment, listen it all in, before I wrote it all out. So without any further ado I give this to you, Nothing Was The Same. I waited for what seemed like the "Furthest Thing" for what I would call Nothing Was The Same Week and the release of Drake's much anticipated album Nothing Was The Same. Even with the album leaking a week and a day early I still waited, and without a single listen of the album before its release I purchased the album Tuesday morning when it officially dropped. I anticipated the moment of what it would be like to actually take the plastic off, open the cd case, put the cd in the player, read through the credits, and smell that plastic paper ink smell of the album sleeve that you always smell when you open a cd for the first couple of times. This time as any other time was no different the smell of the sleeve was the same like opening any other cd, but the material and music itself with one lsiten would change the game, yet again. Drake wrapped his everything into the 16 track album with every beat and lyric taking us to a place in present time that his utmost comfortable with. With most of the production of the album coming from Drake's right hand man Noah "40" Shebib the Toronto rapper also enlisted a all star line up of features including Jhene Aiko, Majid Jordan, Detail, Sampha, Jay Z, 2 Chainz, and Big Sean. With the album releasing Drake had a lot of promo running to do from Sports Center (to talk about Fifa), The Ellen Show, Chelsea Lately, Hot 97 Interview with Angie Martinez, and Jimmy Fallon to name just some. Nothing Was The Same is in stores and on iTunes now!
