J. Cole Gets Chained On His 29th Birthday

Yesterday was not just J Cole's 29th Birthday, yesterday was also Cole's show a Madison Square Garden in NYC and probably one of the biggest highlights of his career thus far. The Dreamville and Roc Nation rapper kept the guest appearances at his show to a minimum by inviting Kendrick Lamar and Jay Z to appear on stage with him during the show. The biggest moment of the night was when HOV took the stage to perform his hit "P.S.A." from The Black Album with the North Carolina native and presented him with his very first and original Rock-A-Fella chain. The Roc Nation boss man finished the whole party with another hit we know all to well, "F*ckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt". I'd say Jermaine had a Dreamville of a birthday.

Jay-Z Speech - 2014 GRAMMY Winner Best Rap / Sung Collaboration

Jay Z was the winner for the Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the Grammy's last night and his speech was by far my favorite of any winner last night. As Hov won the award he was all smiles while taking the stage for his acceptance speech and what he said during that speech melted my heart. Hov's love for Bey and Blue should have everyone smitten.
"I want to thank God I mean a little bit for this award but mostly for that in all the universe for conspiring and putting that beautiful light of a young lady in my life"
"And I want to tell Blue look Daddy got a gold sippy cup for you"

Grammy Performance 2014 John Legend - "All of Me" and New York Standard Hotel Performance

I find John Legend extremely beautiful and amazingly soulful and his Grammy performance fell nothing short of spectacular. He took this stage at this year's Grammy's to perform his chart topping hit single "All of Me" which he wrote about his love for his wife Chrissy Teigen. You can catch his Grammy performance above and another performance of that hit song of his below that he actually performed at the New York Standard Hotel.

Grammy 2014 Performance Beyoncé feat. Jay Z - "Drunk In Love"

One of the most anticipated moments of the Grammy's for me was Beyoncé's performance with her hubby Jay Z for the most part because I was dying to see them perform my favorite song "Drunk In Love" live. Tonight it happened and the show could have been over after their performance because it was just that great, they were amazing.

Drake Hosts & Performs On "Saturday Night Live"

The OVO King Drake was the host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live this past week which was a pretty big gig to do the hosting and performing. The Toronto native found himself in various skits as he was getting his Mazel Tov on with his bar-mitzvah rap, channeling the right A-Rod character, doing an impersonation of his Young Money mentor Lil Wayne, becoming a wizard, and being an obnoxious Dad while being harassed by his daughters friend. The rapper took to the stage two different times to perform some of his hits as his first performance was him performing his songs "Started From The Bottom" and Trophies. Drizzy's second performance was of his songs "Hold On We're Going Home" and "From Time" where he brought out Jhené Aiko to perform with him. His hosting and performing were nothing short of perfect and it was such a pleasure to see Aubrey able to get back to his acting roots. Check the performances and some of the skits below.

Throwback Thursday: Biz Markie - "Just A Friend" , Mario - "Just A Friend", & Jimmy Fallon & Justin Timberlake "History of Rap" Part 2

I do believe this is my first Throwback Thursday of the new year, how exciting! Today I deliver an oldie but a goodie and the reasoning behind my Throwback choice is all for the simple fact that someone I know got the words stuck in my head as they were singing "Oh baby you....Got what I need...But you say I'm just a friend". I asked them why they were singing "Just A Friend" because both the remake and original was old. This person's response was "Oh Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake sang it on Jimmy's show while they were performing "The History of Rap". First and foremost I giggled because of who it actually was singing this oldie but goodie song and secondly I was thinking only if this person really knew the actual history of this song.
So today for Throwback Thursday I will school everyone on "Just A Friend". The original track "Just A Friend" was a 1989 classic performed by none other than rapper, DJ, beat boxer, singer, and comedian to name a few of his resume talents Biz Markie. The track originally peaked at #9 on the Billboards making it Biz Markie's most successful song to date. Biz's song derives from the 1968 song "You Got What I Need" performed and written by Freddie Scott. Moving to almost present day but 12 years ago R&B singer Mario recreated Biz Markie's one hit wonder hit "Just A Friend" with his very own touches making an even bigger hit on the charts peaking at #4. Though the two songs of Biz and Mario are that of the same name they are also rather different at the same time. Biz Markie's track "Just A Friend" was referring to his cheating girlfriend and Mario's track "Just A Friend" was about a one sided love interest, my how times have changed. bringing us to today you have a Late Night talk show host and a Pop and R&B superstar Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake giving you a little taste of rap music of the past and present with their performances of the "History of Rap" leaving "Just A Friend" embedded into peoples minds to sing the whole day through. Take a peek and listen as one song transcends through time to the present.
